Week in review

As can be seen by my last post, I have been officially introduced to the DPT program at Loma Linda. Monday was filled with orientation and a little lecture and Tuesday we got our first look at the lab. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday were more typical days for what the rest of this course is going to be like which was nice.

I must say that even after just one week, I feel like I've known my group members for much longer! God really answers prayers all around! I was talking with 2 of my new friends and we all agreed that our group was a visible answer to prayer!

Lucky for me I was able to take it easy the first two nights after class. It was mostly review for me because of the anatomy class I took last semester at SAU and so I reviewed, but no hard studying was accomplished on Monday or Tuesday.

Wednesday became a different story. During our last lab session on Wednesday we were told that mini rounds and grand rounds would occur the following day. These rounds are some of the most intense review and drilling sessions I've ever encountered! My group was moved from TA to TA (teachers assistants) and was drilled first for 3 minutes and then during grand rounds for a minute. This meant that we had to know our stuff by Thursday morning, not Friday like I had originally thought. So Wednesday I left lab completely fried at 5 pm. I came home, ate dinner, and literally laid down on the couch with the TV on and thought of NOTHING for and hour. It was beautiful! Then at ten till 7 I headed back to the lab to review with Casey. We ended up staying until 10:15 pm. And then I came home and fell into bed.

Thursday was an intense day for me! Because I desperately want to please everyone and get the answer right 100% of the time I was extremely nervous about the rounds we were going to do. Thankfully I started off well, rattling off the answers like I'd known them my whole life, however as the hour of drilling wore on I started getting sloppy. Unable to spit out the answer I knew was right. After 2 hrs of drilling we were sent back into lecture for material that wouldn't be on Friday's exam. Lunch hour came and went along with a study/eat session between the members of my group. And finally the last lab of the day with Grand Rounds! This time, anything that the head TA's would potentially put on the exam was labeled. Things that we didn't need to know for the practical were eliminated. But again, the drilling began. And again, I started off well. I knew the material. But as the hours dragged on, I again got sloppy and frustrated that my mouth wasn't saying what my mind wanted it to say. At 3 pm we were kicked out of lab so the exam could be set up for the next day. Steph, Casey, and I decided to take a study break at Starbucks for an hour. We weren't allowed to talk about anatomy at all during this break! So we had some down time laughing and talking together! It was a super fun afternoon! After coffee, we headed to the library to meet up with Katrina to study the lecture notes and to use the bone boxes to reinforce what we knew. From 4 to 7 we quizzed each other and taught each other what we knew about anatomy. After dinner at Chipotle and another hour of study, I headed home.

Friday morning I woke up early, on accident might I add, and got ready for my day. I then looked at the 6 muscle insertions I needed to know and put it away. I had the lecture exam first, which took me maybe 25 minutes max. I felt really good about it and the one question I hadn't been sure on, I'd gotten right :) Then at 10 I took the lab practical. Again, I felt good about it. Lab practicals are always tricky though. I never know how much info to put, or if that extra will make them assume I was guessing and then count me wrong. Such a fine line to walk with wording on practical exams.

Friday afternoon I was able to catch up with Han and her mom, friends from Asheville! It was sooooo good to see them and get a little taste of home in. We hit Huntington beach and enjoyed a relaxing afternoon, just soaking up the sun and good company!

Now, today is Sabbath! The day I've been waiting all week for! I love that God made us to take time out of our week to rest up and remember who gave us the great minds we've been using all week. This Sabbath, I was blessed to spend the day with Han, her mom, and a new friend, Nessa. We had a fabulous time going to sabbath school and then church. Both of which were inspiring and just what I needed! Han's mom treated us to a special lunch at Olive Garden where we spent over 3 hours just talking and enjoying each other's company. We then headed to Prospect Park where orange tree run rampant! We were able to pick fresh oranges, and I have a ton for the coming week! I'm excited to have a fresh orange for breakfasts and lunches!! :) We had sundown worship in the park along with another long talk about life and goals and God. It was an amazing end to the Sabbath! After leaving the park we headed to Cuca's. A local mexican restaurant which I will soon be frequenting! It was a wonderful end to a fantabulous week!

There have been major ups and downs this first week alone in CA, but God has proven to me over and over again that He is in control and that He has my best interest in mind. I feel like I am where I'm supposed to be and I'm so glad that He has put so many amazing friends, both new and old, in my life!
