Sunday dawned bright and early at 5:30 am with a text from
Liv. I did not get up then, but rolled back over and slept until 8:15 when I dragged
myself out from under the covers and headed down the stairs to pack a lunch and
get my bag packed for the desert.
Katrina had plans to meet a friend out at Joshua Tree, the
desert, and invited Casey and I to come with. So after frantically cleaning up
the apartment in anticipation of Jill coming back, I got myself ready to go and
headed to meet up with the girls.
The drive wasn’t super long and we got to the visitor’s
center before the boys did. We condensed into one car and headed out to find a
trail. The first one we found was a 2 mile loop. Easy to walk. But exhausting in the heat!
After making the loop we headed back to the air conditioned
car and ate lunch before finding another easy loop to walk around. This time we
found a dam with “water”. The water had definitely dried up, but we did find
some goats climbing around on the rocks, which was pretty cool.
Overall, the desert is hot, sandy, and generally
unappealing. But the rock formations and the new plant life is really cool! I
have a feeling that I could really learn to love the desert or at least the
national parks within the desert. :)
